As your humble Austin Music Minute host, I always emphasize the importance of experiencing bands live, although it’s difficult for me to describe my impression of the live experience in a few sentences. It boils down to that frequent saying, “You had to be there.” One such example is Austin-based ensemble My Education. Last summer, they performed a musical score they created for F.W. Murnau‘s groundbreaking silent film Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927). The emotion and stunning imagery were made that much more vivid and intense with a fiery, atmospheric live soundtrack. It literally gave the story more life.
My Education built their reputation upon their unique approach to composition, their improvisational skill, and their fearless experimental soundscapes. Since forming in 1999, the quintet has made an art form of taking that extra leap beyond traditional style into the avant garde, creating multi-instrumental pieces that mostly defy description. They’ve been touring steadily since 2001, performing for audiences in the U.S. and, for the first time, throughout Europe this past spring.
Make plans to see My Education perform tonight at Red 7, 611 E. 7th St. This is a solid, exciting line-up that includes San Antonio indie orchestral group Deer Vibes, San Antonio-based songwriter and musician Jonah Vin, and local one-man noise rock artist Notlando.
