Seattle Weekly writer, Mike Seely has said, “Don’t judge Texas by George Bush, Rick Perry, the Enron swindlers, the heat, the sprawl, big oil, big hair, the Cowboys, cowboy steaks, SMU’s coke habit, Roger Clemens’ steroids, or J.R. Ewing’s drunken philandering. Judge it by guys like Joe Ely…” Joe Ely is one of the true pioneers and great stand-outs of the alternative-Texas-country music scene. The singer-songwriter has been quoted as being, “too rock for country, and too country for rock.” He’s also been called “roadhouse music.” Whatever you want to call him, his own special blend of country, rock, folk, and blues is iconically Texas and we’re proud to claim him. We’re excited that Ely will be with us this Wednesday February 19 at 11:00 a.m. and supplying us with tunes from his last album, Satisfied At Last. The album is appropriately titled as the singer-songwriter claims it very accurately sums up where he was in his life when he composed it. The music is a full expression of Ely himself, not even tethered by the chains that can accompany recording through a label that is not your own or in a studio that is not your own. No, Ely made this album in his own recording studio in the hill country west of Austin and issued it through his own label, Rack Em’ Records. Catch Ely here on Wednesday and live at the Stateside at the Paramount February 21 and 22 where he’ll be joined by fellow Texans, Jaston Williams and Jo Carol Pierce for an unforgettable night of casually swapping stories and songs on stage. Guests are encouraged to wear house shoes, sip long necks, and ask any question within reason.
