The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble list peace, prosperity, life, health, love, grace, and culure as their interests on Facebook, and you know what else, the band can jam. All and all, it’s something we can really get behind. After graduating from the school of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in 1976, composer and percussionist, Kahil El’Zabar paired up with tenor saxophonist, Edward Wilkerson Jr. to play music. The pair had a lot of fun mixing contemporary African American musical styles, like jazz, with more traditional African instrumentation and rhythms. A mix of other instrumentalists, including sax, trombone, and conga players were added to the group next, including Light Henry Huff, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Joseph Bowie (Defunkt), and Ernest “Khabeer” Dawkins (New Horizons Ensemble), the latter of whom replaced Wilkerson.
