Twenty years ago, former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl put out his solo debut under the name Foo Fighters, and now the name is synonymous with “biggest rock band in the world.” Grohl has cemented his legacy not just as a dynamic frontman, but also as an avowed music nerd–he’s teamed up with Tom Petty, Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D, and many, many more over the years. Now, you can add “director” to his resumé. For their eighth album, Foo Fighters ventured to eight different cities to explore their music scenes in detail and record a song with those cities in mind. It’s all chronicled in a HBO documentary series and new album, both called Sonic Highways. With the premier of the Austin episode tonight on HBO, KUTX’s Art Levy chatted with Grohl about Sonic Highways, his lifelong love of Austin City Limits, and the enduring legacy of Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators.
