At times, I refer to Devin James Fry as “the wandering soul unafraid of the dark.” Travel is an art form, meant to open wide those doors of perception and lighten the heavy loads of the brain. It is not simply going places, it’s being those places, exploring the environment with open heart and mind. The Austin-based songwriter and musician wholeheartedly welcomes whatever journey lies ahead.
For Fry, embracing life in this way equals freedom. And he has an uncanny ability of capturing this distinctive feeling on his uniquely composed pieces for his band Salesman. This time, he’s giving an intriguing preview of Salesman’s forthcoming cycle of work Escalante with a brand new track called “Horn.” To celebrate, the band is having a single release show tonight at Holy Mountain, 617 E. 7th St. It’s a full bill indeed for tonight’s festivities, a local-music lover’s dream, if I may be so bold: East Cameron Folkcore, Frank Smith and Burgess Meredith. Doors open at 8 p.m., and it looks as though it may sell out rather quickly. Get there early. I’ll be taking a break from my on-air duties for the show. Recommended.
