Where many often cite very specific bands when defining quintessential sounds of late, late ’80s/early ’90s indie music (think GBV or Neutral Milk Hotel), there are also the groups of reverent music lovers scattered here and there who give major props to Australian cult-fave The Moles for their ignited sound. Front man Richard Davies carved out a killer, ultra-melodic band of badass “kiwi chamber pop” coolness utilizing the purity of lo-fi production and unbridled energy. And it didn’t stop with The Moles. Davies’ solo albums, and collaborations including GBV’s Robert Pollard (Cosmos), set the oughts ablaze.
It was in 2016 that Davies brought The Moles back in for a recharge with the album Tonight’s Music, totally and unapologetically loyal to the band’s original distinctive sound. And now you’ll get it double time with the latest collection – on a double album, no less. Code Word features sixteen tracks of solid power pop, rock ‘n’ roll goodness boasting a number of talented contributors the albums’ recordings, assembled by Davies – including Will Courtney, Adam Ostrar, Steve Patterson, Wil Hendricks and Michael Krassner here in Austin.
Say what?! Yes. And it’s damn good. Catch The Moles current line-up at a rare performance tonight for the album release show at Beerland, 711 1/2 Red River. Kay Odyssey, Quin Galavis and of course Will Courtney share the bill.
Doors at 8 p.m. Massive. Very recommended.
