Matthew Logan Vasquez approaches classic Delta Spirit tracks and more with a new appreciation.
Something about today’s AMM featured track, “Blue Eyes,” from Matthew Logan Vasquez‘s forthcoming release Frank’s Full Moon Saloon struck a familiar chord. And then, the realization: It’s by Middle Brother, a side project with MLV, John J. McCauley III (Deer Tick), and Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes). “Blue Eyes” was on their 2011 self-titled release, only this time Shovels & Rope joins Vasquez on the Frank’s Full Moon Saloon version.
Today’s Love Austin Music Month spotlights this three-album box set by Vasquez, the first LP containing a new collection of familiar favorites from a vast catalogue including music from Delta Spirit and projects connected to Vasquez, with contributions by Scott McMicken (Dr. Dog), Jessica Dobson (Deep Sea Diver) and more. The meticulously curated LP set was done from an autobiographical viewpoint, chronicling earlier versions of Vasquez’s creative (and personal) journeys. “Each song in this collection is sort of an epiphany from my earlier selves,” Vasquez explains. “They still transport me to those moments and after years of performance, I have exponential appreciation for what they’ve come to mean to me.”
Before launching the first leg of his upcoming tour in April, Vasquez kicks off a Texas residency with a show at Hole In the Wall on Thursday, Feb. 1. Longtime AMM fave Mayeux & Broussard share the bill. Doors at 8 p.m. MLV plays at the Hole each Thursday in February with a different musical guest each week.
