The madness begins. Enter the chaotic whirlwind of activity that is SXSW.
Actually, unless you’ve been hiding (and I shan’t blame you if you have), the madness started last week with shows aplenty and a flurry of “kick-off” parties in various spots round town. Not to mention the mind-blowing, gargantuan display of psychedelic dreamtime color and sound unleashed upon breathless audiences tripping all over themselves watching The Flaming Lips at ACL Live. But it’s all part of the deal, and your humble Austin Music Minute host will offer a few recommendations for your perusal, includinng official SX showcases and those off the beaten path.
Today, there’s a massive party put together by the folks at Spider House and local electro-pop trio BUHU, with support from KUTX and the Cactus Cafe. The Freaks Meet Folks Fest features three stages of live music, which continues through the evening, a special ATX Comedy Hour in the Spider House Ballroom at 6:30 p.m, and art installations by the Is This Art? Collective. Lots to see and hear, and plenty of local bands, including The Deer, Sweet Spirit, Boyfrndz, Tinnarose, The Gents, Shmu, The Big Fist, Calliope Musicals, Holiday Mountain and many more, with BUHU closing out the night.
Head out there now. Admission is free when you RSVP at this Do512 link. Recommended.
