Grant Mullen, Gianni Aiello and Henry LaVallee were just out of high school when their 2018 debut SLUFF came sprawling out all over the place with all the things – a pop/punk/garage/surf/rock-out frenzy, with the kind of hooks that grab from the start. In various interviews with Naked Giants (well, a lot of interviews), everybody had to ask what “sluff” meant, and the band would reply “everything and nothing,” so…nailed it. It’s everything but nothing specific, pinned to nothing but many influences converging and rearranging like mad. Even their second LP The Shadow, perhaps not necessarily as sprawling, still exudes the off-center charisma as loud and proud as ever.
More is on the horizon. But you’ve got a chance to catch Naked Giants live tomorrow night, Thursday April 7, at Empire Control Room (moved from The Parish), with Louisville, KY psych/post-punk trio Wombo. Doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m. Don’t miss it.
