It took awhile to release this baby into the world. But it’s here. And Tameca Jones shines.

The release date for Tameca Jones‘ anticipated debut album kept getting pushed back…and back. But this wasn’t a decision made lightly. Jones was mired in trepidation because she wanted to make certain that it was ready. That she was ready. As KUTX Music Editor Jeff McCord discovered in his interview with the KUTX Artist of the Month alum, Jones knew recording and producing the music was no small investment – financially and mentally.
“And studios actually scared me,” Jones told McCord. “I’m a performer. When I sing a note, it’s out there. I don’t have to think about it. It could be wrong. It could be sharp, it could be flat. It’s about the vibe, the crowd and the performance. But in the studio, everything is magnified…”
“If I’m going to put something out there for eternity, it has to be good. It has to be – it has to register with me first.”
Plants and Pills arrived Feb. 29, a solid 8-song collection that is all Tameca – passion, fire, sensuality, no nonsense and unfettered defiance. KUTX has featured the single “So Gone,” while today’s AMM track spotlights “Paint The Roses.” But your AMM host is very partial to “Wave and Smile” – for reasons that become immediately obvious. Who needs to binge-watch docu-dramas when absurdity, stupidity and drama populate real life? There are more important issues at hand. “Biding my time / and biting my tongue…,” Jones declares, “…I just wave and smile / wave and smile…”
Time for a party. Tameca Jones shares an excellent bill with rap/hip-hop artist Blakchyl at her release show tonight, Saturday April 20, at The Courtyard, 208 W. 4th St. Doors at 8 p.m.
