Real Roots

Only a genuine artist like Dale Watson would be able to coin a word like “Ameripolitan” and have it make all the sense in the world. Truth be told, the Austin troubadour just got a bit irritated with a lot of the lameness that was conveniently being labeled as “country” music these days (because it isn’t). So he created the term “Ameripolitan,” music with a prominent roots influence – hillbilly, before we knew it as country; honky tonk; rockabilly; western swing; and down-and-dirty, no-bull outlaw. Many times, you’ll hear the Austin Music Minute refer to “old-school country.” That, as Watson might tell you, is pretty much anything that isn’t something you’ll see on the Country Music Awards anytime soon.

Watson has since created Ameripolitan Music LLC and The Ameripolitan Music Awards to benefit and honor all the musicians and bands out there who are keeping it real. The First Annual Ameripolitan Music Awards is scheduled for next month (February 18th) at the Wyndham Garden Hotel and Woodward Conference Center.

Meanwhile, it’ll do you good to see Dale Watson play tonight at The Continental Club, 1315 S. Congress. The music starts at 10 p.m. Get you a dose of the real stuff. Recommended.
