Westward Bound

The best way to get your music out there is to take it on the road. Ali Holder and Christy Hays are ready to head out West, but not before doing some local representin’ with a special split set tonight starting at 8 p.m. at The White Horse, 500 Comal St.

Holder is just about to release her new album, In Preparation For Saturn’s Return, on August 24th on iTunes. A lot of the blues and R&B influences that have shaped her songwriting come shining through on this folk/country-based collection, the making of which she’s delightedly described as “summer camp for grownups.” It’s a pivotal time for Holder, and the album is a representation of both her musical past and the new directions she’s moving toward in the future.

Hays, originally from the Midwest, released a stunning debut album, Drought, in 2012. These deeply introspective songs push beyond Americana toward a bigger experience with stories told from different perspectives. The intensity and emotion on the album translates well into Hays’ live performances. She recently did a soft release of her new EP O Montana, which will be available at tonight’s show and at some of the shows on the tour.

Hays and Holder will head out to Fort Worth and Wichita Falls first before making their way to Kansas, Missouri, Wyoming and Montana, then Hays will head out with her band for more dates in Arkansas, Oregon, California and Arizona.

After Holder’s and Hays’ performances tonight, stick around for sets by Devin Jake at 10 p.m. and Milwaukee-based artist Evan Christian at midnight. All good. Recommended.
