Danny Barnes returned to his home state this week to play a special Studio 1A session ahead of his show at Cactus Cafe this Saturday. The winner of the 2015 Steve Martin prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, Barnes is known for not only being a master of his instrument but being wildly experimental with it as well. He has a rich history in Austin as a member of the Bad Livers for a decade, as well as Swamp Thing and the Barnburners but found himself relocating to Washington for the more temperate climate among other things.
With a new record coming out next January on ATO Records called Man on Fire he talks about the music scene in Washington, his time at UT as an audio production student, and what it’s like to collaborate with artists like John Paul Jones, Bill Frisell, and Dave Matthews who all played a part in his upcoming release.
