I think the best way to get a sense of Folk Uke’s music is to tackle the title of their new album head on. Starf#cker is a hilarious and brutally honest look at the unsavory characters that hang around celebrities. For the two women in Folk Uke this subject matter is more than just rich songwriting material, it comes from growing up with two of the most well known fathers in American music. Cathy Guthrie (daughter of Arlo Guthrie) and Amy Nelson (daughter of Willie Nelson) met while working at Ingrid Croce’s (wife of the late Jim Croce) restaurant and bar in San Diego. While initially cautious of the meeting orchestrated by their famous fathers, the two quickly bonded over a mutual love of folk music and a shared wicked sense of humor. The rest is folk music history.
If the title of their album doesn’t a good enough picture just take a listen to their session from Studio 1A at the bottom of this post, songs like “BJ for a DJ” might give you a better idea.
