Alex Lahey: “I Haven’t Been Taking Care of Myself”

Fresh from her television debut on Late Night with Seth Myers, Melbourne’s Alex Lahey is nothing shy of tenacious. When the structure of her music education became too constricting, she switched her trajectory, took her sound and momentum into her own hands, and began quenching her thirst for musical anarchy. She came together with “cult music collective” Animaux before breaking out her own, booking her first gig before writing anything for the set, and releasing her own debut EP B-Grade University last year ahead of last month’s full length I Love You Like A Brother.

Lahey’s sound could be called a better-informed pop-punk revival. “I Haven’t Been Taking Care of Myself” wields a dirty love lament with an upbeat rock sound straight from 2006 that still hold notes of where the pop-rock sound has come in the last decade. Her lyrics perfectly illustrate that moment when you’re lying on your floor in a toxic-love coma reflecting on your choices that led you to that floor, having an epiphany of self-control, finally wiping the potato chip and cheesecake crumbs from your mouth and oversized sweatshirt, and washing that toxic-love off in the shower of dignity and self-respect.

“I Haven’t Been Taking Care of Myself” appears on I Love You Like A Brother, out now via Dead Oceans. Tune-in to KUTX 98.9 on Thursday, November 30th at 8PM to hear Alex Lahey before catching her that night at Barracuda.
