BADBADNOTGOOD: “Speaking Gently”

This week, the Song of the Day features ACL Fest 2017 artists.

Toronto’s BADBADNOTGOOD is the perfect collaborator, acting as a low-key launchpad for everyone from Snoop Dogg and Ghostface Killah to Mary J. Blige and Future Islands’ Sam Herring. But the band’s instrumental jazz/rap/funk hybrid is a great scene-setter in its own right. Last year’s IV was a mix of guest spots and band features, playing like a handcrafted mixtape or imaginary soundtrack. On “Speaking Gently,” BADBADNOTGOOD take the spotlight and push their sound into a lot of directions at once. Synths, sax, and flute float around a heavy rhythm, alternating between something cosmic and maybe a dusty track from a lost ’70s thriller. BADBADNOTGOOD is the rare backing band that sounds just as good up front.

“Speaking Gently” appears on IV, out now via Innovative Leisure.
