Let’s be honest – can we really ever ask for less Austin-based afrobeat? The answer – which of course is a resounding no – leaves with local nine-piece Continental Drift. Continental Drift formed about 3 years ago, and actually following several Hard Proof performances, core members decided themselves and Austin needed more afrobeat in life. Continental Drift honed their sound over half a year, and since then they’ve written, recorded and produced their debut vinyl full-length The Tide – an album that pays tribute to international flavors of cumbia, deep psychedelia and of course, afrobeat. Grammy winning producer Adrian Quesada and Alex Mass of The Black Angels lent their respective talents to a couple of tracks including this one – a cover of ’70s group AMANAZ’s “Sunday Morning”.
You can check out Continental Drift tomorrow in Studio 1A, and Friday, November 11th for The Tide‘s release show – 9:00pm at Cheer Up Charlie’s along with Hard Proof, Superfonicos and more.
