Magna Carda: “The Root”

Magna Carda’s new album CirQlation swirls with new ideas, sounds, and expectations, but the Austin hip-hop group still finds time to pause and reflect. “Everybody come from somewhere / Or maybe nowhere, ” begins “The Root” before exploring all the space between those two places. Megz Kelli’s rapid-fire rhymes are both precise and all-encompassing, and the band blends jazz and soul with Dougie Do’s nimble production. “Strong roots will make your tree grow old,” goes the hook, and Magna Carda instinctively understands that it takes both the old and the new to reach that place. Download “The Root” below.

Magna Carda plays live in Studio 1A on Thursday, February 4 at 9 p.m. Also, catch them live at the Belmont on Friday, February 5 for ‘The CirQLation Experience,’ featuring a photo exhibition, listening booths, and a performance of the full album.
