All this week, the Song of the Day highlights ACL Fest 2015 artists.
Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath got her start with Mountain Man, an a cappella trio that crafted a few gorgeous albums and wound up touring as Feist’s backup singers. Meath uses both of those styles and experiences with Nick Sanborn, her Sylvan Esso bandmate. Sometimes she’s hushed; sometimes she’s big and bold. It’s this divide that makes Sylvan Esso stand out from most of their electro-pop peers.
“Coffee” is the duo’s breakout hit from their self-titled debut album, one of my favorites of last year. What makes the song so captivating is its sparseness. It’s futuristic while still sounding human and vulnerable. Download a Studio 1A version of the song below, and listen to another song from the session here.
