Toro Y Moi: “Lilly”

All this week, the Song of the Day highlights Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015 artists.

The best Toro Y Moi songs find a sweet spot between disco, R&B, and psychedelia, but they’ve always sounded solitary, even when Chaz Bundick is tailoring them for the dance floor. This year’s What For? was a bit of a curve ball, then: with the help of a nimble band, Bundick turned in a breezy set of psych-pop songs. These are meant to be heard outside in the sunshine, taking Toro Y Moi further from Bundick’s nocturnal, lo-fi roots.

But Bundick still knows his way around a groove. “Lilly” sounds like Toro Y Moi’s past and future combined, matching rubbery funk to a sparkling chorus. There’s no telling where Toro Y Moi will end up stylistically, and that’s exactly what makes Bundick such a thrilling artist. Listen to the song below.
