The Academy Awards Nominations Through Music

Nominees for the 2017 Academy Awards were announced this morning, and the list weighs heavier than usual with music-affiliated nominations. No surprise to anyone, La La Land is up in every category related to music. La La Land is a love-letter to the musical motion pictures of the mid-twentieth century starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. In addition to landing a nomination in the top four categories (film, director, lead actor and lead actress) among others, La La Land scooped-up noms for Best Original Song (twice), Best Original Score by Justin Hurwitz, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing. In total, La La Land has 14 Oscar nominations. Meryl Streep earned her 20th Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the 20th century New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins who was known for her giving heart and her abysmal operatic performances. One Best Documentary Film Short, Joe’s Viloin, tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a 91-year-old holocaust survivor and a 12-year-old Bronx schoolgirl brought together by Joe’s donated violin. Jim: the James Foley Story, Trolls, Disney’s Moana, and La La Land round out the Best Original Song category while Moonlight, Lion, Jackie, Passengers, and La La Land make-up Best Original Score. The 89th annual Academy Awards ceremony takes place February 26th. Full list here.
