Broken Spoke Doc to Premiere At SXSW
One of the many films premiering at SXSW this year is a documentary about one of Austin’s most beloved music landmarks: the Broken Spoke. Honky Tonk Legend focuses heavily on owners James and Annette White, who built the venue themselves in 1964, and how their love and devotion to each other and this city has kept the Broken Spoke kicking for half a century. Overflowing with testimonies from country music legends, the documentary juxtaposes those interviews with those from developers dedicated to finding a balance between building-up the South Lamar district and preserving Austin’s rich musical history. Honky Tonk Legend: The Tale of the Broken Spoke has its first screening this Sunday afternoon at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.
