Orthy: “E.M.I.L.Y.”

As Ian Orth states it, “being in love is rad,” and he isn’t afraid to declare it, either. Under the moniker Orthy, the Austinite displays both his love for music and his wife Emily. Orthy started as just a bedroom recording project, but some of his songs wound up getting attention from a radio station and label in New York. As live requests started coming in, Orth decided to turn Orthy into a full-fledged band. Over the past few years, the group has toured with fellow electro-influenced acts like Holy Ghost! and Chromatics.

Orthy’s second EP, E.M.I.L.Y., spells out Orth’s intentions with bold strokes. The title track builds a sky-high hook on top of a pulsing beat while Orth spins his tale of love. Included on the EP is a remix by Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend, but the original maintains the best features of the band: it’s an intimate song, yet far-reaching.
