Heartless Bastards

My KUTX // October 2, 2021

The thread coursing through Heartless Bastards’ sixth album, A Beautiful Life, is gratitude. Erika Wennerstrom’s songs have always overflowed with heart–contrary to her moniker–but somehow the Austin band sounds even bigger and clearer. She and longtime bassist Jesse Ebaugh have also widened their musical circle. They’re joined by musicians who have logged time with My Morning Jacket, Okkervil River, White Denim, Patty Griffin, and more, giving A Beautiful Life a real communal feel.

On Friday, October 8, Heartless Bastards celebrate this continued evolution with a set at ACL Fest, playing the Lady Bird Stage at 2:30 p.m. And this week on My KUTX, we’re revisiting Wennerstrom’s guest DJ set from 2018. Her mix features a lush favorite from Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, Steve Gunn’s expansive folk-rock, fellow Ohio natives Guided By Voices, and more. Hear Heartless Bastards’ My KUTX on Saturday, October 2 at 6 p.m. or listen anytime in the player above.
