From gorgeous folk-rock melodies emerges Rosali’s ardent emotional fire.
Your Austin Music Minute host listened to Rosali‘s Bite Down before seeing the album art. Totally caught off guard. It’s freakily brilliant, like this demented wild-eyed contrast to the rich, golden swathes of classic rock/folk rock/psych sounds layering the LP. Rosali (North Carolina-based songwriter Rosali Middleman) brings the vocals that make the bittersweet beautiful. Once again, she collaborated with guitarist David Nance and members of Mowed Sound to record her latest album, released via Merge.
“Bite Down makes me think about singers and bands that throw themselves hard into the storm, the way the Rosali quartet does,” says Destroyer‘s Dan Bejar in a personal review, summarizing the mood perfectly. “The calm of her voice over top of the band’s raging—it is the emblem of songs that live to put themselves in harm’s way. But it’s not harm. It’s just that you have to play hard to get at these goods…”
Rosali brings her Bite Down tour to Austin tomorrow night, Tuesday April 2, at Hotel Vegas, special guest Little Mazarn opening the show. The music starts at 9 p.m.
