For dynamic blues-rock duo Black Pistol Fire, things got hectic splitting time between two homes, especially with one here in Austin and the other miles away in Toronto, but a lot was going down in both places. Mainly, making killer tunes.
Guitarist and vocalist Kevin McKeown and drummer Eric Owen moved to Austin back in 2009 after recording and performing as part of the trio The Shenanigans. They immediately fell right into rehearsing and touring as often as they could. And it was in Austin where producer Jim Diamond approached them about recording their self-titled album, released in 2011. That fall, they began work on their next full-length, Big Beat 59, with producer Michael Rocha back in Toronto, along with a companion EP called Shut-Up: A Tribute To Little Richard.
Their recipe for success is rowdy, ragged and loud rock ‘n’ roll going absolutely primal on the guitar. They engage an electrifying mix of classic Southern, garage and – to an extent – punk rock. But it’s the floorboard-rattling guitar wails and drum beats that show the undeniable blues influence scorching through. When the dust settles, you realize that was one damn good time.
The good times kept coming as Black Pistol Fire took the stage Saturday December 22 at The Parish, 617 E. 6th St. Rounding out the bill were The Space Crazies and local band Cause In Effect.
