Tony Kamel honors his grandmother’s tried and true wisdom on his latest release.
It began with memories that struck Tony Kamel a few weeks after the passing of his grandmother. Kamel was at her home, amongst her packed-away belongings, with an undeniable sadness in his heart, but something else took hold that filled him with gratitude.
Kamel recalled his grandmother saying, “Life starts to knock you around eventually. You gotta be ready to fight with a smile.”
It all made sense. “It occurred to me that life is really just a beautiful, joyful fight to the death,” Kamel says, an idea which became the central theme to his forthcoming album. Its first single, “Damn Good Ride”, recorded at Bruce Robison‘s The Next Waltz Analog Studio in Lockhart, breaks out banjo-laced melodies in a tribute to this ongoing resilience, and to his grandmother’s sage advice.
Hear the new music at Tony Kamel’s show tonight at The Continental Club on South Congress, with a line-up featuring Kathryn Legendre, Ellis Bullard, and Stephen Clair, who kicks off the evening at 7:30 p.m.
