Fifteen Years of Shivers

Vivid memories of the White Ghost Shivers‘ early days many moons ago remain for your humble Austin Music Minute host! Imagine seeing this motley string crew of ragtime debauchery jazzing it up for a tiny audience of five or so people at Beerland. But it made no difference whatsoever when it came to the sheer joy and genuine skill of their performances. The WGS crew plucked their strings as though it were the last night on earth.

The bar was soon raised with the addition of sweet Cella Blue and her exquisite vocal expertise and dazzling charisma. The annual White Ghost Shivers Halloween Ball exploded into one of the most talked-about (and attended) events of the season, and soon they were bringing their brand of hokum, early jazz, hill billy and cabaret to enthusiastic crowds ’round the world.

It’s hard to believe that fifteen years have flown by since the Shivers got their start. But the band is celebrating this magical milestone with a special pair of White Ghost Shivers 15th Anniversary Weekend shows this Friday and Saturday night at The Continental Club, 1315 S. Congress Ave. The first party kicks off Friday at 9 p.m. with sets by WGS friends Amplified Heat, the Flying Balalaika Brothers, Boom Town, and Sounds del Mar. Saturday night’s party begins at 8 p.m., with Clyde & Clem’s Whiskey Business, the White Ghost Shivers, Wino Vino, the McMercy Family Band, and The Big Jug Band on the bill.

Yes, indeed! It’s one massive party. Don your finest threads and come out to celebrate the greatness, naughtiness, splendor and sauciness that is the White Ghost Shivers. Tell ’em the Austin Music Maven sent you. This one comes very recommended.
