Hail To the King

This is one that your humble Austin Music Minute host holds close to heart. Elle King is an artist of bold candor. It doesn’t take much to figure out that she sings it like it is, sings it the way it happened, and is then ready to dust off the uptight naysayers and swagger onward. She does it her way.

Early on, King was admittedly a bit uncomfortable with the whole idea of making “pop” music, actually bristling at the thought. Ew. That can’t be good. Then the track “Ex’s and Oh’s” (featured on today’s AMM) emerged from a studio session with Dave Bassett (Fitz and The Tantrums), and it sparked a revelatory moment. Her debut full-length Love Stuff rocks the hell out of pop, and adds so much more to it, making it modern but with the vibe of another era.

King is getting married next year, and word is that her 2016 Ministry Tour has something extra-special for the fans. Not many folks know King’s an ordained minister herself, and she’s made her services accessible to fans who would like to get married – at her show. Tonight, you can find out if any Austinites took advantage of this opportunity and will be tying the knot at King’s performance at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater, 801 Red River. Doors open at 7 p.m., and Paul Cauthen opens the show.

Long live the King. Recommended.
