Carrie Rodriguez’s Laboratorio tonight at Paramount Theater, with guests Calexico and Roberto Tejada.
It’s a different show every time. Carrie Rodriguez‘ Laboratorio is a series curated to honor and celebrate Latine music, art and culture, but this is no mere tribute. It’s an extraordinary experience that only a talented group of musicians as the one assembled by Rodriguez, a multi-talented artist and songwriter herself, could so beautifully and organically execute. Bassist Roscoe Beck, guitarist David Pulkingham, and KUTX’s own Alex Marrero on drums join Rodriguez with different guest artists for every Laboratorio, and though each show is choreographed in terms of set lists or run-of-show, the performances themselves have an astounding improvisational power that leaves audiences floored. It’s storytelling on another level with contributions from everyone involved.
Check out Texas Standard’s recent interview with Rodriguez, which includes video from her Studio 1A performance this week, then catch the next Laboratorio tonight at The Paramount Theater. The special guests for this collaborative performance: Renown indie-rock outfit Calexico, and award-winning poet and author Roberto Tejada. Doors at 7 p.m.
