Who: Any psych fan with an appreciation for the genre’s heritage will dig Austin five-piece Surly Gates. Some reviewers enthusiastically mention Golden Dawn and Bubble Puppy in the same breath as Surly Gates, thanks to the band’s heavy, sultry, gritty churn of ’60s garage rock-inspired hazy psychedelia, right down to the rich vocal harmonies.
What: Fans and reviewers alike have anticipated a full-length release from Surly Gates, and it’s finally here – Lay Low. And that means an album release party.
When and where: See Surly Gates tonight at Stay Gold, 1910 E. Cesar Chavez, with a perfect bill for the celebration including The Avocados and MODRAG, and a DJ set by Jake Garcia (The Black Angels, The Ripe). Doors open at 8 p.m. Get there early to see all the bands. Very recommended.
