Justine’s presents a wild time travel this Bastille Day with a tribute to ’80s Austin underground punk.
Justine’s posted a few black and white show photos on their Instagram recently that are all essential viewing. They’re ridiculously cool. Some are from a collection of early 2010’s show pics by Renate Winter. There’s also one of Gary Floyd of The Dicks by Pat Blashill from his book TEXAS IS THE REASON: The Mavericks of Lone Star Punk. It was taken at Voltaire’s Basement, a short-lived Austin venue where punk reigned supreme.
These photos reverberate with an unbridled energy. All are mind-blowing. Maybe it’s just the perception of a music fan, and an admirer of the aforementioned photographers, but damn. The movement in each shot doesn’t stop. It’s a glimpse into something life-changing.
And the reason for sharing the photos? Justine’s curated their annual Bastille Day event to pay homage to the restless creativity that thrived in that dingy underground spot. Voltaire’s Basement: Punk Rock Bastille Day reignites the spirit of the punk bands and renegade artists who convened in a literal basement of a bookstore formerly located on Lavaca.
Join the party tomorrow night at Justine’s, 4710 E. 5th St. Doors at 9 p.m. And prepare to get your face melted off by the insane (and insanely LOUD) Warblob, featuring Sean Powell (F*ckemos, Surfbort), Orville Neeley (Bad Sports, Radioactivity), Monte Najera (Niis), and Adam Laidlaw (Surfbort). The AMM’s favorite trash-glam punks Lord Friday the 13th are on the bill, and Justine’s very own Pierre Pelegrin leads his band Les Débauchés in round of punk classics.
