Did you hear the Austin Music Minute today? Actually hear it, not just read about it here. You can play it below. Maybe you heard it on the radio this morning – and got the jolt of your life, like, “What the hell are you doing, Gallardo?!” Or maybe you were telling yourself, “Hey! It’s about damn time!”
It’s Love Austin Music Month, presented by the City of Austin Music and Entertainment Division in collaboration with KUTX 98.9, a celebration of music artists across all genres that have played a role in our city’s musical history. Whether you’ve got hardcore coursing through your veins or not is not the point. If you know anything about the local music scene, you’ll know why today’s AMM featured band Krum Bums is an essential part of this story. Things started brewing for the crew around 2000, with founding members Dave Tejas and Trae Dog inspired by a Principal Skinner quote on The Simpsons for the band name (so much for Mother Skinner not looking out the window…). Ever since releasing their self-titled debut in 2003, probably even before that, they’ve been doing live shows that have rightly earned legendary status in the annals of ATX punkdom and beyond.
As Greg Beets once wrote in the Austin Chronicle, “Like a glass of vodka flung into your eyeballs, the Krum Bums’ take on punk rock burns.” Through all the chaos, changes in line-up and the city’s skyline, there’s been no signs of slowing down. The fans are lifers.
Want proof? Celebrate more than 20 years of Krum Bums at their show tonight, Thursday Jan. 19, at Mohawk on the outside stage. Doors at 7 p.m. Get your blood pumping with Peace Decay, Liberty & Justice and Nerve beforehand. Oh, and drink the vodka. It’s not for your eyeballs.
