Who knew that spiders could provide such wisdom – and dance moves?
Originally, there wasn’t an overarching theme within Suki Waterhouse‘s collection of songs before it became Memoir of a Sparklemuffin, eighteen tracks in total. They’re reflective of past experiences, in alignment with Waterhouse’s belief that one needs to “keep exposing darkness to sunlight” to continue healing. Was this a metamorphosis similar to a butterfly’s, from dark to light? Not exactly.
“I felt more like a scrappy spider,” Waterhouse says. “I came across the Sparklemuffin—which is wildly colored, does this razzle-dazzle dance, and its mate will cannibalize it if she doesn’t approve of the dance. It’s a metaphor for the dance of life we’re all in. The title felt hilarious, ridiculous, and wonderful to me.”
Revel in the sparkling dances when Suki Waterhouse performs tomorrow night, Friday Oct. 18, at ACL Live at The Moody Theater.
Opening the show is Alicia Bognanno‘s solo project, Bully, on tour supporting Lucky For You, a shoegazey/punked-up solid rock LP with a similar connection to metamorphosis, achieved through grief, healing and perseverance. The album itself is a loving tribute to the late Mezzi, the sweetest dog whom fans got to know through Bully’s social media.
“Mezzi was my best friend,” Bognanno says. “She made me feel safe and empowered, she showed me that I was worth loving and never judged me or viewed me as a let down. I always felt accepted, understood and so much less alone. Mezzi was living, breathing proof that I was worthy of being loved. There was nothing else I could do except sit down and write [the album], and it felt so good.”
Doors for tomorrow’s show at ACL Live at 6:30 p.m. It’s a badas line-up.
