If you’re a longtime They Might Be Giants fan, the following will make perfect sense.
One only need present the lyrics to, say, “Birdhouse In Your Soul,” and you instantly know it’s a classic TMBG signature. “I’m your only friend / I’m not your only friend / But I’m a little glowing friend / But really I’m not actually your friend / But I am.” Just the tip o’ the iceberg. Or perhaps the fantastic quirk-fest that is “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” (you may well find yourself breaking into “Even old New York was once New Amsterdam…”). Who else could so playfully weave these tuneful tales into things simultaneously wonderfully weird and catchy? The wildly inventive Johns Flansburgh & Linnell know a thing or two about magical melodies that are capable of etching permanent grins on enthusiastic listeners’ faces.
Behold! There is a new treasure for your eager ears to feast upon, Phone Power, which shows the duo is as playful and colorful as ever, spanning across a wide musical range while remaining faithful to their experimental nature.
Most of the shows in They Might Be Giants’ final (yes, sadly – final) tour are sold out, but luckily, tickets are still available for their show tonight at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater at the box office. Get their early! Doors open at 8 p.m. Recommended.
