Santiago Jimenez, Jr. at Antone’s

If you, like your Austin Music Minute host, follow the adventures of one Garrett T. Capps, the San Antonio music man and Lonesome Rose proprietor who rolls Tex-Mex rock like no other, you’re very familiar with his genuine love of conjunto, Norteño and Tejano, and the pioneering artists who continue to inspire musicians of all genres. A few at the top of Capps’ list would definitely be la Familia Jimenez: Santiago Sr., Jr., and Flaco. Capps even had the opportunity to record Santiago Jr. to capture the magic.

Songwriter and Hardcharger label founder Jesse Dayton listened to these magnificent old-school style recordings by El Chief and…something clicked. To say it was a life-altering moment for Dayton would not be exaggerating. He told Capps he would love to release the tracks as a Santiago Jimenez, Jr. album, and that’s exactly how Still Kicking! came to be, including some classics dating back to Jimenez’s early career.

Still Kicking! is out May 20, and Jimenez celebrates with an album release show tonight, Cinco de Mayo, at Antone’s, with Conjunto Los Pinkys. Doors open at 7 p.m.
