All right, all right. Get about. Your humble Austin Music Minute host got a bit of chiding after mentioning “bluegrass” and Whiskey Shivers in the same breath. Well, this is no retraction, music lover. Your AMM’s favorite band of hoodlums absolutely owns its traditional bluegrass, country, folk and hillbilly roots with a reverence unmatched, but these gents add something very punk rock to it, jagged round the edges and in your face with stand-up bass. It’s an invitation to everyone in the vicinity to just go mad with Whiskey Shivers’ boundless energy, and everyone does.
Their new album, Some Part of Something, is a prime example of that exuberant rowdiness, unleashing a fine fury of strings on fire and defiant, devious grins gleaming through. Get in on the party at their album release show tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the outdoor stage. And it’s a damn fine bill with The Deer and Sour Bridges. The music kicks off at 8 p.m.
As if this party wasn’t enough, NYC prog/art-pop fiends and recent KUTX Studio 1A guests Sherry are having their own party at the Mohawk tonight on the indoor stage, celebrating the release of their brilliantly titled new album Not Brandy, Not Whiskey. And it’s another excellent line-up: The Halfways, Megafauna, and SMILE.
Seriously. All in one spot. You can wander back and forth. Hell, make it a Whiskey/Sherry party. Recommended.
