Music is the rejuvenator. The ultimate educator. esperanza spalding knows it holds the key.
Renown bassist, vocalist, songwriter, composer and five-time Grammy Award winner esperanza spalding nearly quit music when she was in college. True story, though mind-boggling. As spalding recently told Guy Raz on The Great Creators podcast, she became concerned with – then ultimately turned off by – everyone’s seeming obsession with technique over actual musical passion at the Berklee College of Music. It nearly led her to leave music behind for a political science degree.
Fortunately, spalding’s story turned out differently, thanks in no small part to her endless musical curiosity, from experimenting with different sounds to learning so much from music of different cultures. As she explained to Raz, whenever sound connects to her, it’s a celebration.
You have the opportunity to see spalding perform tonight at the Paramount Theatre. Doors at 7 p.m.
