It’s a Juneteenth celebration at the Carver Museum, with Scarface, Tank and The Bangas and more.
East Austin’s Rosewood neighborhood is the place to be for the Stay Black & Live Community Cookout and Music Festival, a Juneteenth celebration happening just behind the George Washington Carver Museum on Angelina St.
The incomparable Tenika Blue is master of ceremonies for the event, which begins with a special Buffalo Soldier flag presentation at 3:45 p.m. Next, Sahara Lounge superstars Zoumountchi start the day’s live music performances at 4:20 p.m., then 2023 Grammy Music Educator Award winner Pamela Dawson leads a DeSoto High School choral performance at 5 p.m. That’s followed by Nigerian-American songwriter and vocalist Tarela at 5:45 p.m., and jazz alto/soprano saxophonist Charmin Greene at 6:30 p.m.
The evening features headlining sets by NPR Tiny Desk Contest sensation Tank and The Bangas, on tour in support of their latest release Red Balloon, and legendary Houston-born rapper, record producer and community activist Scarface (a.k.a., Brad Jordan).
Riches Art Gallery is hosting a live artist market on site, and attendees can also enjoy carnival games, activities and a self-guided tour of the Carver Museum, along with smoked BBQ served up by the best local pitmasters.
