Auckland pop-punk outfit The Beths is owning the awesome contrast on Straight Line Was A Lie, perhaps letting in a few slivers of hope on this upbeat-sounding LP examining life’s darker realities. Imagine existential dread soaked in the sweetest riffs, sunny choruses and melodies swirling round themes of depression or detachment. Songwriter/vocalist Elizabeth Stokes makes self-awareness feel as though everything might come out okay. Maybe.
Get that album. And see The Beths tonight at Emo’s on E. Riverside Dr. Phoebe Rings opens the show (don’t skip their latest gorgeous offering, Aseurai). Doors at 7 p.m.
