Your humble Austin Music Minute maven thought it would be most appropriate to begin today’s AMM post with this quote from the infamous Hunter S. Thompson: “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”
That pretty much sums it up.
The high-octane Gonzo journalist would have turned 76 today – not that he’d give a damn, but there you go. And in the spirit of this hard-driving heralded reveler, a few local bands and DJs are gathering for a special birthday celebration show tomorrow night, dubbed Fear & Loathing in Hotel Vegas 2. Yes, kids, it’s the sequel to last year’s depraved shenanigans, featuring live music and vinyl spins at Hotel Vegas, 1502 E. 6th, and neighboring venue The Volstead, right smack next door at 1500 E. 6th St.
The evening starts out with femme fatale rock by The Harms, followed by garage-psych rockers Kay Leotard, freak rock hoodlums Grape St., head-trippin'”psychic taco rock” by Hundred Visions, and The Black Angels‘ Christian Bland with his side project, The Revelators. Plenty of music in between provided by DJ’s from Holy Wave, DJ Danomega and The Saturday Night Matador.
You scared yet? You should be. Doors open at 7 p.m. Buy the ticket, take the ride.
