Your AMM host heard about Seattle-based band Beautiful Freaks around the time of their 2022 LP, 80HD, which itself was pushing into another level of amplified DIY punk expression – including varying styles of clown make-up. But at the core is the band’s unhinged energy, on the albums and at every single live show, an energy matched only by the mosh pits that look more like cyclones. This summer’s full-length release We Talk to Birds brings pop into the queer experimental/hardcore frenzy, and though the album delves into darker themes, that unmistakable euphoric intensity fuels its fire.

Beautiful Freaks returns to the ATX for a show tonight, Monday Aug. 12, at Vinyl Beauty Bar, 2400 E. Cesar Chavez. Doors at 7 p.m., with sets by San Marcos band Maddie & the Deadnames, and Austin bands Social Dissonance and Lavender Scare.
