Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos gives voice to Chicanx identity on Lucha.
KUTX has given you a great starting point with Y La Bamba‘s “Dibujos De Mi Alma” to explore the exceptional Lucha. And here are some raves courtesy of the AMM from Y La Bamba’s previous Studio 1A performance: Songwriter, vocalist and producer Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos says their seventh LP’s title is twofold – “Lucha,” the nickname for Luz, can mean “light” as well as “fight” or “struggle.” Both meanings connect to Mendoza Ramos’ examination of an existence in multiplicity: Love, queerness, Mexican-American roots, Chicanx identity, plus the struggle and growth along the journey. It’s also a diary of the pursuit of deeper relationships for Mendoza Ramos, as both an artist and a human being who simply wants to be.
This is tonight’s must-see performance. Y La Bamba plays at The Parish, with Chilean-American songwriter Chis Bowers Castillo’s musical project Kiltro opening the show. Doors at 7:30 p.m.
