On January 22, 2018, Daniel Johnston’s longtime manager, Tom Gimbel, helped throw a birthday party for Daniel here in Austin. A concert at the Mohawk helped raise resources and awareness for mental health, which Daniel struggled with his entire life. The event captured international attention, and the concert ended up being the last live performance of Daniel before his death in 2019.
Gimbel soon created the Hi, How Are You Project, a non-profit that has kept this spirit alive by educating people around the world about the importance of mental health. He also served as the general manager of the Austin City Limits TV program for over a decade. And this week on My KUTX, Gimbel is our guest DJ. With May being “Mental Health Awareness Month,” Gimbel plays an hour of his favorite Daniel Johnston-related music: covers, inspirations, and songs from Daniel himself. Hear My KUTX on Saturday, May 4 or listen anytime at the top of the page.
