My KUTX // August 17, 2024

In 2018, Jon Muq moved from the East African nation of Uganda to Austin, hoping to fulfill his musical dreams. Here in 2024, those dreams have taken on a life of their own. Earlier this year, Muq released Flying Away, his Dan Auerbach-produced debut to rave reviews. He’ll also debut at ACL Fest in a few months, following tours of Europe. Then he tackles a triumphant hometown show at the Paramount on November 30 with David Ramirez.

It’s a dizzying rise for Muq, who grew up around fifty languages before learning to speak seven of them. He credits the music of Michael Jackson and others for helping him learn how to sing and express himself in English. Muq’s songs fit right in here in Austin. They’re simple and direct, based in folk but given Texas country touches.

This week on My KUTX, Muq is our guest DJ. In his set, he explores the confidence of Billie Eilish, how Kacey Musgraves helped him overcome a fear of alligators, and plays music from a band that he’d never heard before moving here: the Beatles. Hear Jon Muq’s My KUTX on Saturday, August 17th at 6 p.m. or listen anytime right here.
