In the late 1960s, Austin was still a sleepy college town, but a small music scene was just starting to form. This week on the Austin Music Experience, we talk with Ricky Stein, who’s written a new book on Sonobeat Records. It was Austin’s first independent label and it kickstarted the careers of Johnny Winter, Eric Johnson, and more. Also, Michael Kingcaid of What Made Milwaukee Famous gives us his favorite Austin music experience: awkwardly meeting Dave Grohl…Plus, back & forth with Jenny Lewis—one from the archives, and one from her Beck-produced new album. Charles Bradley and Austin’s Wooden Birds are in Studio 1A, and Slaid Cleaves celebrates his 50th birthday. Join us Friday at noon and again at 11 pm on KUTX 98.9.
