Behind the Walls

Musician, musical historian and author Caroline Gnagy delves into an area of Texas history that few people know about, or one that people would even suspect had ever existed.

Her new book, Texas Jailhouse Music: A Prison Band History, shares the stories of inmates at the Huntsville prison unit, and neighboring Goree State Farm for Women, who performed during weekly radio broadcasts and live stage performances throughout the Lone Star State. From songwriters to champion fiddlers, each had a significant role in a most extraordinary history behind bars.

Gnagy recently visited the KUTX studios to chat with Laurie Gallardo about her new book. The interview aired last week on Laurie’s show, but you can listen to it here.
