Best Songs Ever…This Week 5.4.18

KUTX Music Director Jeff McCord shares the best songs ever…this week!

Alex Lahey – “I Love You Like a Brother”

Let’s start with Alex Lahey, a talented Australian singer/guitarist. The title track to her new album I Love You Like A Brother is an undeniable, full-on pop blitz, and it’s devoid of the unrequited love cliches you might expect. Instead, she sings of becoming friends with, well, her brother. Funny and unpredictable, this one’s a keeper.

MIEN – “Earth Moon”

Up next, some psych-rock with an Austin connection. The band is MIEN (pronounced “mean”), and they are one of those acts made up of members from other established bands—the Earlies, the Horrors, and the Black Angels’ Alex Maas is their lead vocalist. It’s easy to get cynical about these all-star ventures, but these guys are clearly playing music for the fun of it. “Earth Moon,” off the band’s self-titled debut, rises up above the psychedelic haze.

Slowdive – “Star Roving”

And finally, a song we at KUTX have been playing awhile, but it still sounds amazing every time I hear it—Slowdive’s “Star Roving.” When a band decides to reunite after being dormant for years, you never know what you’re going to get. In the nineties, the British band Slowdive released three albums that were all shoegaze classics, and no one really expected them to pick up right where they left off some twenty years ago. But that’s exactly what they’ve done. The reunion album, just called Slowdive, is every bit as good as their earlier work, and their recent show at Stubb’s had them delivering the goods live as well.
