Mike Hadreas is Perfume Genius but by his fifth album, this year’s critically acclaimed release Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, he knows to embrace collaboration in order to bring his musical world to life, for real. He paired up with Blake Mills who produced his previous album, 2017’s No Shape. “I mean these are our songs, you know? I wrote them, and I wrote the melodies, the lyrics. I brought the map. But then in the studio, they were created together and I feel like they belong to both of us in a lot of ways.”
Mills brought together legendary musicians, Jim Keltner (John Lennon, Mick Jagger) and Matt Chamberlain (Fiona Apple, Pearl Jam, Elton John) on drums, Rob Moose (Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver) with string arrangements, and that’s Phoebe Bridgers on background vocals in the single “On The Floor.”
“It’s kind of this really weird dance in the studio, because I’m really protective of the world that I had originally – and the feeling – and what I imagined it could be. But also, once you involve other people, it’s not going to end up being that. But if you are dedicated, it can be something different, something better.”
