This Week in Texas Music History, we’ll visit a tiny town that had a huge impact on Texas music.
On August 18, 1973, Jerry Jeff Walker and the Lost Gonzo Band recorded a live concert in Luckenbach, Texas, that became part of the landmark album, ¡Viva Terlingua! Walker hoped to re-create the sound and feel of an impromptu gathering of friends performing music for a live audience. The band debuted several now-legendary songs, including Gary P. Nunn’s “London Homesick Blues.”
The Luckenbach recording of ¡Viva Terlingua! was part of a watershed year for Texas music, since 1973 also saw the release of such groundbreaking albums as Doug Sahm and Band, Waylon Jennings’s Honky Tonk Heroes, and Willie Nelson’s Shotgun Willie.
